Kathmandu, February 3. The Chinese Ministry of Education on Monday imposed bans on the use of mobile phones in premises of primary and middle schools.
According to China’s Internet Network Information Centre, 74% of the total population under 18 years of age carry mobile phones. The problem of nearsightedness(or Myopia) is also increasing among the children.
The authorities informed that the new set of rules is targeted to improve eyesight and mental health of the students as well as protect them from internet and video game addiction.
The government of China is concerned about the harmful effects of the internet on the health of the nation’s youth. Earlier in 2018, the authorities had imposed new regulations for the gaming industry.
In 2019, the government also imposed a time-based restriction on the gaming habits of the children. On weekdays, children were restricted to gaming for 90 minutes whereas, on holidays, they were allowed to play for up to 3 hours.
Media reports suggest that the parents are confused about the practical ability of the new rules. The ministry has instructed the schools to seek alternative ways for parents to communicate with their children during school hours.
The ministry has also opened doors for exceptions. “The students can use mobile phones in schools if they submit special applications to their school with the written consent of their parents/guardians.” said the ministry.
