Bangladeshi Army Chief corruption case: UN orders investigation

Kathmandu. February 5. In response to the investigation report by Al Jazeera, the United Nations on Thursday ordered for a full investigation into evidence of corruption and illegality involving Bangladesh Army.
Earlier on Monday, Al Jazeera released a 1-hour investigation based documentary video that revealed the illegal involvement of the Bangladesh military in purchasing highly sophisticated and intrusive mobile phone surveillance equipment from Israel.
The report entitled “All the Prime Minister’s Men” by Al Jazeera’s undercover reporters also indicated the engagement of Bangladesh Army Chief of Army Staff General Aziz Ahmed in the corruption network. General Aziz has maintained strong ties with his two foreign-based brothers who are fugitives from justice after being found guilty of the 1996 assassination of a rival political official.
While the army claimed that the equipment was purchased for one of the contingents who are set to be deployed in the UN peacekeeping Mission, a spokesperson for the UN, Stéphane Dujarric informed that the peacekeepers do not use any intrusive electronic equipment.
After the release of the report, Bangladeshi Ministry of Foreign Affairs the findings of the reports was fueled by the opponents. “The allegation of corruption is a serious matter that should be investigated by the relevant authorities,” said Dujarric.
