Angolan Cartoonist wins the Franco-German Human Rights Prize
Kathmandu. February 8. Sérgio Piçarra, an Angolan cartoonist has become the country’s first personality to receive the Franco-German Prize for Human Rights and the Rule of Law.
Every year, the Franco-German Prize is given to individuals who make an exceptional contribution to the promotion and protection of human rights. Piçarra was awarded for his commitment to the promotion of freedom of expression in Angola through his cartoon caricatures.
This year, more than 70 individuals from all over the world were nominated. Out of which, 15 were picked as winners by the German and French Ministries of Foreign Affairs.
According to Euronews, Piçarra expresses his critical views on society and politics through the cartoons that he draws with reference to the headlines of daily newspapers. “This type of cartoon is the editorial cartoon that is exactly dedicated to the analysis of, let’s say, humorous, satirical political events,” noted Piçarra.
The artist had begun his career as a cartoonist in the 1990’s and he has invented his own regular characters that are highly admired for criticising diverse political and social contexts of Angolan reality.
