Kathmandu. February 11. Over the past few months, violent clashes between Sudanese ethnic communities have increased exponentially. Hundreds of people have already died and thousands are forced to migrate away.

In order to check communal tensions, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan(UNMISS) have increased their frequency of patrols around the hotspots.

Special Representative of the Secretary-General to South Sudan, David Shearer informed that the peacekeepers are being deployed to seven temporary operation bases all over South Sudan.

With the beginning of the dry season, seasonal migration of cattle starts to rise, which triggers conflicts between the groups. “Our very strong feeling is that, if we can deploy early in the dry season, we have a better chance of success in preventing violence before it happens,” noted Shearer.

According to Shearer, delayed enforcements of the 2018 peace agreement could turn to be a direct threat to the fragile condition of the newly formed nation. Shearer requested an increase in support for the peacekeeping mission to reach local communities.

Warrap, Maban, and Jonglei are the most affected parts of the country.
