Deadly Storm hammers Texas, 4.1 million people living in “Nightmare Disaster”
Kathmandu, February 16. A deadly winter storm in the wee hours on Tuesday, left more than 4 million people in Texas to wake up without power.
The tornado, composed of bitter cold, snow and sleet that ripped through North Carolina’s Brunswick County killed at least 3 people and injured 10 others. At Least 50 houses and trees were uprooted. The displaced residents are being housed in temporary shelters.
According to the US National Weather Service, the temperature is expected to drop to -5°C in northern and central Texas on Tuesday noon. Heavy snowfall and rain is predicted to cause more freezing weather in the coming days.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas(ERCOT) stated that the static electric circuits supplying the areas in Texas are not designed to operate in record-low temperatures due to which 4.1 million lives are severely affected.
Areas around Galveston, Houston are the most affected by the power outage, where the ERCOT has declared level 3 Energy Emergency Alert. So far, at least 25 people have died due to extreme temperatures.
Thousands of families are rushing to reserve hotels for a warm place to stay. Many people are also using gas-fueled car heaters. Houston Police have informed that at least 2 people and a child died due to carbon monoxide poisoning when a car was used to generate power and heat.
Texas which is known for its desert lands and heatwaves, is now experiencing the coolest temperatures in centuries. Parts of Texas hit extreme low temperatures of -18°C on Sunday, breaking the previous record of -11°C in 1895. The blanket of snow is also causing massive road accidents. 6-people died when 130 vehicles collided on Interstate 35 on Thursday.
