Kathmandu, February 18. American researchers have revealed that the lifespan of the total US population dropped by a year in the first half of 2020.

According to the report released by CDC National Center for Health Statistics, the average life expectancy at birth dropped from 78.8 years in 2019 to 77.8 years in the first half of 2020.

Elizabeth Arias, the lead author of the paper claimed that the decline was due to almost 4 lakhs Covid-19 deaths and overuse of drugs during the pandemic.

Robert Anderson from the CDC said, “To find a decline like this, we have to go back to the World Wars.”

The effect of the pandemic is more severe in the Black American communities who suffered a decline of 2.7 years in the average life expectancy.

The report is the product of analysis of provisional death records collected by NCHS till October 2020. The data was calculated separately for the total population, sex-wise population, Hispanic, non-Hispanic white and non-Hispanic black populations.
