Kathmandu, March 4. Major General Nick Welch, a two star senior British army officer has to face a court martial as he lied that his wife lives with him, 120 miles away from their children’s school. He said so to claim 50,000 pounds for his childrens’ private education.
He is the highest ranking official to be brought before court in 1815 after the Napoleonic Wars.
During the first trial at the court it is said that Major General Welch took up the job at the Ministry of Defense in 2015 and said that his wife would be living with him, allowing him to claim the allowance for his childrens’ education.
Between Dec 2015 and Feb 2017, he claimed an allowance of 48,000 pounds. He has denied one count of the fraud and had been living in the four-bed family quarters in London.
Under the Continuity of Education (CEA) allowance, armies are provided with 90% funding for their children’s education as long as they are living with them at the relocated posting.
Mrs. Welch has said that her husband dishonestly continued to have the allowance to provide for their two children’s private education.
The trial is still being continued in the court.
