Kathmandu, March 10. Over the last few years, most of the middle class Chinese population preferred pork over other food items and considered it as a luxury. China still continues to consume 28% of the world’s meat including half of world’s pork. But recently, people have started to shift towards veganism.
According to a report from Good Food Institute, China’s plant-based meat market was estimated at 6.1bn yuan in 2018 and projected to grow between 20 and 25% annually. Many Chinese youths have said that they have opted for plant-based meat as they taste quite good although not as same as the taste of meat.
In China, KFC is now selling vegan chicken nuggets, Burger King is offering an Impossible Whopper, and Starbucks is serving Beyond Meat pastas, salads and wraps. Many other companies also have started selling the plant substitutes, which have reached school canteens, hospitals and businesses.
Many companies have also stated that people are willing to pay an increased price as they know they are choosing a healthier option compared to meat.
The sellers have said that these alternatives will reach the mainstream market soon, as Chinese consumers have become conscious and seek for sustainable products.
