US grants temporary residency for Myanmar citizens
Kathmandu, March 14. The Department of Homeland Security in the United States have granted temporary residence permit for the citizens of Myanmar as the country’s recent political instability following the military coup.
The decision will provide a Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months. The TPS is a program for immigrants who cannot return to their countries due to armed conflicts and natural disasters. Those immigrants can work legally for a certain period of time that can be renewed as well.
People who are in continuous residence as of March 11, 2021 are eligible for the Myanmar program.
The Biden administration imposed sanctions on those responsible for removing civilian-led government in Myanmar last month. US officials have said that they will continue taking actions until they restore democracy in Myanmar.
