Kathmandu, March 16. India has called for the relaxation for the sanctions imposed on Syria as the country is going through a humanitarian crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic has posed more threats.

T.S. Tirumurti, India’s permanent representative to the UN voiced his concerns for Syria adding that there is urgent need of assistance to Syria without any discrimination, politicization and preconditions at the UN Security Council meeting. He also urged World Health Organization and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs to prioritize vaccination program in Syria through the COVAX initiative.

Titumurti also emphasized that the situation would not change drastically but delinking humanitarian and developmental work will help in creating an environment of trust and confidence. He also added that India believes in maintaining the territorial integrity of Syria.

UN human rights expert Alena Douhan had called on the US to remove the sanctions on Syria in December last year under the Caesar Act.
