Uttarakhand CM’s comment on ripped jeans sparks widespread criticisms
Kathmandu, March 19. The statement from Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister (CM) has gained a lot of criticism from rights’ activists, leaders and public.
Tirath Singh Rawat, who was recently elected as the chief minister of Uttarakhand has given a controversial statement that women wearing ripped jeans give out wrong message to the society and children. He said so about a fellow woman passenger that he encountered in one of his flights. He said:
“She was wearing boots, jeans ripped on the knees, and several bracelets. She had two children travelling with her. Her husband is a professor in JNU. You run an NGO, wear jeans ripped at the knees, move about in society, children are with you, what values you will teach?”
Women rights activists and Congress leaders have widely criticized his statement saying that it was highly derogatory and was a reflection of a patriarchal mindset.
Actor and Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan also emphasized that a person in such position must think before speaking and such bad mindset encourages crimes against women. Her granddaughter Navya also condemned the statement and took to social media to express that she will proudly wear ripped jeans.
