Kathmandu, March 19. The United States government on Thursday announced that agreeing to the vaccine loan deals, the White House will send four million quills of AstraZeneca vaccine to Mexico and Canada.
According to a report by Reuters, 2.5 million doses of the vaccines will be lent to Mexico and the remaining 1.5 million will be borrowed by Canada. Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard confirmed that the agreement has been signed upon the request of the Mexican government.
Al Jazeera reports that in March Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador urged US President Joe Biden for a vaccine loan. But, since the US was focussed on vaccinating its people, the White House denied sending vaccines to other countries.
The national death toll in the US has already topped 5,30,000. So far, 65 million Americans have received at least one dose of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.
Last month, The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized single-shot Johnson & Johnson’s COVID vaccine for emergency use. Claiming the effectiveness of more than 85%, Johnson and Johnson promised to deliver 100 million doses of the vaccine to the United States in 2021. The first 20 million doses will be delivered by the end of this month.
