Kathmandu, March 29. New Zealand has become one of the first countries in the world to approve paid leave for miscarriages.

The country’s parliament unanimously approved the legislation, which allows both the parents for a three-day paid leave if they suffer from a miscarriage.

Ginny Andersen, a member of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s Labour Party introduced the bill. She said that the grief that comes with miscarriage is not a sickness and it takes time to recover physically and mentally. She also hoped that with this move, more women will come forward and express their feelings and seek help.

During the final reading of the bill, she said, “I can only hope that while we may be one of the first, we will not be one of the last, and that other countries will also begin to legislate for a compassionate and fair leave system that recognizes the pain and the grief that comes from miscarriage and stillbirth.”

India has allocated six weeks of leave for women who suffered a miscarriage.
