Attempt of assassination on former president of Maldives, situation critical
Kathmandu, May 8. Former president of Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed is in a critical condition after an assassination attempt through a blast.
It is said that he has undergone 16 hours of life-saving operations at ADK hospital in the capital Male. He suffered from injuries on his head, chest, abdomen and limbs.
Two of Nasheed’s bodyguards and two bystanders got injured in the incident. No-one has claimed the attack that took place at 20:39 local time (15:39 GMT) in the capital Male.
President Solih has said that the attack will be considered as an “an attack on Maldives’ democracy and economy”. He has promised a “swift and thorough” investigation, saying the perpetrators will “face the full force of the law”.
Police Commissioner Mohamed Hameed has said that 450 officers had been deployed to investigate. Two experts from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) will also arrive in the Maldives on Saturday.
Nasheed, 53, is known for his work on tackling climate change, and for his criticism of religious extremism. He had come into power in 2008 before being toppled by a coup in 2012.
