China warns Bangladesh against joining Quad
Kathmandu, May 13. China has warned Bangladesh against joining Quad, adding that Bangladesh joining Quad will cause substantive damage to bilateral relations between the two countries.
Li Jiming, China’s ambassador to Bangladesh said, “Obviously it will not be a good idea for Bangladesh to participate in this small club of four (Quad) because it will substantially damage our bilateral relationship.” He gave the statement at at a virtual meeting organized by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh on Monday.
Bangladesh’s foreign minister Dr. AK Abdul remarked that the statement was “very unfortunate” and “aggressive”.
A senior Bangladesh foreign ministry official has said that Dhaka has not been invited into the Quad, therefore the statement from the ambassador seemed irrelevant.
Chinese defense minister Wei Fenghe had visited Dhaka last month where he told president Abdul Hamid that Beijing and Dhaka should work together against powers outside South Asia that are trying to establish “hegemonism.”
Quad, short for Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, is an alliance between US, India, Australia and Japan. The first summit level meeting of Quad was held on March 12.
