Mumbai records highest 24-hour May rain, 230mm
Any rainfall above 204.5 mm is considered extremely heavy: India Meteorological Department
Kathmandu, May 18. In the past 24 hours, cyclonic storm Tauktae poured 230mm of rain on Mumbai. Weather experts have claimed that this was the rainiest day (of May) in the history of Mumbai.
In the 24-hour duration ending at 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday, the Santacruz observatory of the India Meteorological Department recorded 230mm of rainfall. Similarly, The Colaba observatory in the southern side of Mumbai recorded 207.6 mm rain in the same period.
According to the India Meteorological Department, any rainfall above 204.5 mm is considered extremely heavy.
Cyclone Tauktae that hammered Western India on Monday, killed at least 21 people and injured many others. So far, 96 people have gone missing. The monster storm uprooted 40,000 and destroyed 16,500 huts in Gujarat.
At 10:30 am (IST) the wind speed near the centre of the cyclone was recorded between 105-115 kilometers per hour. This shows that the cyclone is getting weaker. Earlier on Monday, the wind speeds were observed to be more than 160 kmph.
