Mali’s president, prime minister and defense minister detained by military
Kathmandu, May 25. The military forces in Mali have detained the president, prime minister and defense minister.
President Bah Ndaw, Prime Minister Moctar Ouane and Defense Minister Souleymane Doucoure have been detained at a military base in Kati. The incident has deepened the political instability, months after a military coup overthrew the previous leader.
UN and the African Union have demanded for the immediate release of the leaders. They have said in a joint statement for the “immediate and unconditional release” of Mali’s leaders and said “the international community rejects in advance any act of coercion, including forced resignations.”
Countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany and the West African regional bloc known as ECOWAS also signed the statement. A delegation from the bloc will also be visiting the Malian capital, Bamako on Tuesday.
The US State Department has also released a statement calling for “unconditional release of those currently being held”.
Kati’s military base is famous for ending rule of the Malian leaders. Last August, the military took President Keita to Kati and forced him to resign.
