India: 577 children orphaned since April 1
Kathmandu, May 26. On Tuesday, India’s Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani said that in the past two months, 577 children all over India, lost both of their parents due to COVID-19 pandemic.
Irani wrote on her Twitter handle, “From 1st April 2021 till 2:00 PM today, the State Governments & UTs across the country have reported 577 children whose parents succumbed to Covid-19”.
She also said that the Central government will protect and support the orphaned children. “GOI is committed to support and protect every vulnerable child due to the loss of both parents to Covid-19.” said Irani.
Media reports suggest that India has a sufficient budget for child welfare. The district administrations are constantly observing the situation of the orphaned children and are sending regular reports to the central government.
Meanwhile, the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) is also preparing to launch a counselling program for targeting mental health of the vulnerable orphans.
