Mahatma Gandhi’s great-granddaughter sentenced to 7 years in prison
Kathmandu, June 8. South Africa Durban court on Monday sentenced a great-granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi to seven years in prison.
56-year-old Ashish Lata Ramgobin, daughter of Ela Gandhi and late Mewa Ramgobind, was pronounced guilty for cheating 6.2 million rands (5.3 crore Nepali rupees) from businessman SR Maharaj.
SR Maharaj, the director of New Africa Alliance Footwear Distributors, had paid the amount to Ramgobin to clear the import taxes of a consignment from India. Upon investigation, the consignment of three “linen” containers was found to be non-existent.
The trial first began in 2015 when Ramgobin was accused of presenting forged documents regarding the import of linen for “Netcare”. She had also shown fake payment receipts of NetCare’s bank account. At that time, Lata Ramgobin was released on a bail of 50,000 rand.
After 6 years from the fraud incident, Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court declared
