Maldivian foreign minister elected president of UNGA

Kathmandu, June 8. Maldivian foreign minister Abdulla Shahid has been elected as the president for the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

He won over Afghan foreign minister Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassoul by a 143-48 vote. The voting was conducted by secret ballot on Monday.

Turkey’s Volkan Bozkir, who is the current chair said that Shahid has been “a strong voice in calling attention to the impact on small island developing states”.

Shahid said, “This is a crucial time for the United Nations and for the world. There is very little time to spare.” He added that his priorities are to recover from the pandemic and to make vaccines available for countries around the world, ensuring no country is left behind.

He also said that he will respect the rights of all and work towards making a gender balanced society.
