Massive internet outage plunges websites into darkness
Amazon, BBC, CNN, and many other websites went offline
Kathmandu, June 8. On Tuesday morning, a major content delivery network(CDN) experienced multiple breakdowns, causing a huge number of websites and apps to go offline.
High-traffic websites such as Amazon, Reddit, Twitter, and major news publishers including BBC, CNN, and New York Times were impacted.
Early reports point to technical glitches at private CDN that caused users to receive “ 503 Error: Service Unavailable” when they attempt to log on to the websites. A large number of websites also reported issues in Image loading.
Several unverified claims have been reported that argue a popular CDN “Fastly Edge systems” to be the cause for the outage.
Responding to these claims, Fastly issued a statement on Tuesday afternoon(at around 4:30 pm NST) and said, “the issue has been identified and a fix is being implemented.”
Content Delivery Network
A Content Delivery Network is a geographically distributed network of servers that connect the website and the user in such a way that the distance between the two is reduced. It enables faster loading of website content even if the user has low-speed internet.
A failure in widely used CDNs such as Cloudflare and Fastly can affect large areas of the internet.
