Nigeria bans Twitter after Nigerian president’s tweet was removed
Kathmandu, June 8. Nigeria has banned social networking platform, Twitter after the site removed President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet.
Information Minister Lai Mohammed said the government had acted because of “the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.
Twitter has said that the ban is “deeply concerning”. The government has said that the ban is temporary, adding that the platform allowed flow of misinformation and spread fake news that could bring harful consequences in the real world.
Use of VPNs
Although the government has ordered companies to ban the site, people have been using VPN and expressing their disappointments and protesting on the same platform.
The diplomatic missions of the European Union, United States, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom has released a joint statement to criticize the decision of the Nigerian government.
About 39 million people in Nigeria have a Twitter account.
The Nigerian office of the attorney general also has ordered immediate prosecution of those who try to bypass the government’s ban.
