Kathmandu, June 12. On Friday, Volkswagen USA announced that one of its vendors was hit by a serious data breach, exposing the private information of 3.3 million customers.

According to the official statement, buyers and prospective buyers of Volkswagen and Audi were affected by the breach. The data included buyers’ basic contact details such as phone numbers and email addresses.

Media reports suggest that the company has reached out to 90,000 of its customers whose sensitive information was leaked during the breach. The sensitive information included vehicle identification numbers, Social Security numbers, and driver’s license numbers. The company promised to offer free credit protection to these customers.

Between 2014 and 2019, Volkswagen had hired an outside vendor which collected information from the customers and stored it in a poorly secured file. The name of the vendor had not been revealed.

The company has urged the customers to remain alert for suspicious emails or calls that might ask them to provide private information.
