Kathmandu, June 13. UP Women Commission member Meena Kumari has been under the radar for her statement for crimes against women. She gave her remarks to the reporters while asked upon the increasing crime rates in the state.

Kumari said, “Girls should not be given mobile phones. They talk with boys and later run away with them”. She further went on to say,”I appeal to parents not to give mobile phones to daughters… if they do, phones should be checked regularly. All this (crime against women) is due to negligence by mothers”

She said, “We, as parents and society, have to put a check on our daughters… always see where they are going, and which boys they are sitting with. We have to check their mobile phones… girls will keep talking on their phone and then they elope”

After she faced widespread criticism, she later told ANI that her statement was misinterpreted. She said that the mobiles should be checked if they are using it for study or other purposes.

Uttarakhand CM also landed in controversy for remarks on women wear

Tirath Singh Rawat, who was elected as the chief minister of Uttarakhand has given a controversial statement that women wearing ripped jeans give out wrong message to the society and children.  He gave such a statement earlier this year in March.

The statement from Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister (CM) has gained a lot of criticism from rights’ activists, leaders and public.

He had said: “She was wearing boots, jeans ripped on the knees, and several bracelets. She had two children travelling with her. Her husband is a professor in JNU. You run an NGO, wear jeans ripped at the knees, move about in society, children are with you, what values you will teach?”

Women rights activists and Congress leaders have widely criticized his statement saying that it was highly derogatory and was a reflection of a patriarchal mindset.
