Kathmandu, June 29. As Australia struggles to check the fresh outbreak of the highly infectious Delta variant, half of the major cities have announced strict lockdowns.

As per the official record of the National Health Department, 271 people in Australia were infected on Monday afternoon.

By Tuesday evening, four major state capitals, Sydney, Darwin, Perth and Brisbane had gone into hibernation. These four cities have a collective population of about 10.2 million people.

Media reports suggest that the outbreak sparked by the Delta strain could affect more than 20 million people, 80% of the total population.

The third wave could be extremely dangerous to a country that gained popularity for safely handling the first and second wave.

So far, nearly 5 percent of Australians are vaccinated against the coronavirus. A very low number when compared to the USA and UK that have vaccinated nearly half of their people.

Australia is preparing to inoculate the elderly groups with Astrazeneca and Pfizer vaccines.
