Kathmandu, August 2. South Korea has said that no decision has been made for joint military drill exercise with the United States(US), adding that the exercise should not create tensions with North Korea.
Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has warned the South on Sunday that holding the drills would undercut efforts to rebuild relations.
The South Korean defense ministry at Seoul has said that they have nothing to say regarding her statement and that the methods and timings has not been finalized for the military drill.
Lee Jong-joo, spokeswoman of the Unification Ministry, which is responsible for handling inter-Korean affairs, said that the exercises should not be a “source of military tension in any case”, without any elaboration.
North Korean leader Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in are seeking to repair strained ties and resume summits after tensions increased after the Pyongyang issue.
US and South Korea hold regular joint military drills, usually in summer and spring.
US President Biden had met South Korean President Moon in May
US President Joe Biden met South Korean President Moon Jae-in and discussed upon a wide range of issues including the Korean Peninsula in May earlier this year.
Biden and Moon has both agreed for the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, with Biden adding that he will meet the North Korean leader when the conditions are right.
In a joint news conference, Biden said, “Our two nations also share a willingness to engage diplomatically with the DPRK, to take pragmatic steps that will reduce tensions as we move toward our ultimate goal of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.” He added they are “under no illusions” regarding how difficult the task is and that his administration has taken up a difficult objective.
