Brazil court to investigate President Bolsonaro for attacks on voting system
Kathmandu, August 3. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro will be investigated for his claims on the Brazilian voting system. The Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) of Brazil ordered an investigation to be opened against him on Monday.
While Bolsonaro will be running for a second term in 2022, critics have been saying that he is giving false claims to not accept defeat in 2022, like former US president Donald Trump. Bolsonaro has repeatedly said that Brazil’s voting system is vulnerable to fraud.
The TSE also decided to ask the Supreme Court to investigate whether Bolsonaro committed a crime by attacking the electoral system on social media and threatening Brazil’s democracy.
The president has called for adoption of printed receipts in case of any disputed result. He also said that he might not accept results of the elections next year if the system is not changed. Many of his supporters have held demonstrations in his support.
On the other hand, a group of 18 active and former Brazilian Supreme Court justices, who also serve as judges on the TSE has said that the election system is free of fraud. The election system was adopted in 1996 and there has not been any fraud case ever since.
However, a congressional committee will be voting on Thursday for the proposal pushed by Bolsonaro.
