Kathmandu, August 6. Mirabai Chanu recently won a silver medal for weightlifting at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
Mirabai Chanu hosted a ceremony on Thursday where she felicitated 150 truck drivers who gave her a lift during her training days.
She gifted them Manipuri scarves, shirts and a full-course lunch. Due to financial issues, she used to take lift in trucks carrying sand to Imphal. Mirabai’s home is situated more than 25 km from the Khuman Lampak sports complex, her training center.
Mirabai Chanu told Hindustan times, “I wanted to see the truckers who provided me regular lifts from home to the training centre and seek their blessings. They really helped me during my hard times of training. I am looking for those sand-carrying truckers so that I can try to extend whatever help they may require now”.
Her family members reveal that the truck drivers used to stop for tea at their shop and pick up Chanu for the lift. Her brother also revealed that she used to get only 10-20 rupees for her journey and her training centre was 20-30 kms far.
Her way of showing gratitude has won hearts on the internet.
She also revealed that she is aiming for the gold medal at the upcoming Paris Olympics, for which she will start her training soon.
