Kathmandu, August 9. Some of the contractors who had roles in empowering US for their almost never-ending war in Afghanistan, are now stuck in Dubai.

As US begun to evacuate their troops from Afghanistan, many contractors are left in limbo in hotels across Dubai. The pandemic and travel restrictions have even made it difficult for foreign contractors to return home.

According to Anthony Cordesman, a national security analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, it is the same situation that affects foreign contractors all over the world, as they are uncertain about their legal status and relations with the employers.

In an article in the Associated Press, it is mentioned that at least a dozen Filipino contractors for engineering and construction company ‘Fluor’ are stranded at the Movenpick hotel in Bur Dubai. It is said that quite a few number of contractors are stranded from many countries that include Philippines and Nepal.

The workers are left with no option but to wait and video call their family and friends while at the hotel, where they are provided meals by Fluor. It is said that the Defense Department has spent $3.8 billion for Fluor’s work in Afghanistan since 2015, according to records.

While the Biden administration is extremely focused on the troops and other groups in Afghanistan, they must also think about the contractors, according to an expert from Human Rights Watch.
