US asks Taliban to spare its embassy in Afghanistan
US has asked Taliban not to harm its embassy at Kabul, as Taliban is nearing to capture the capital along with other cities in Afghanistan
Kathmandu, Aug 13. The United States (US) is trying to gain assurances from the Taliban that they would not attack the US embassy in Kabul. The State Department on Thursday revealed that they were evacuating around 1,400 Americans from the embassy.
The embassy has also urged all Americans to leave Afghanistan through commercial flights as destruction is presumed in the coming months in the capital, rather than a détente.
US is constantly convincing Taliban to not attack its embassy, if they want foreign aid and assistance from US into the country. The Taliban on the other hand, wants to be seen as a legitimate factor and seeks to establish relations with major powers such as Russia and China.
Other governments around the world have also warned Taliban that they will stop receiving aid if they overturn the Afghan government. Germany’s foreign minister has also said that they will not be providing financial support to Taliban if they ultimately rule Afghanistan with a hard-line Islamic law.
Experts have said that there is no guaranteed right side and evacuating now was necessary rather than to wait; otherwise will create scenarios like in Vietnam or Somalia. However, the embassy will remain open, according to officials.
According to officials in Washington and Kabul, regular meetings are held daily between an emergency action committee.
The Biden administration is also said to be concerned regarding the evacuation. They are worried if the evacuation would create a domino effect on other diplomatic missions, which could lead in collapse of the Afghan government.
