Indonesia flies Airplane with refined “Palm oil”
Kathmandu, October 7. On Wednesday, Pertamina, the Indonesian government’s oil firm, successfully tested its new bio-jet fuel “Bioavtur” and flew a twin-engine aircraft on a short route from Jakarta to Bandung.
Bioavtur (also known as J2.4) is a blend of jet fuel and refined palm oil. Before Wednesday, it was never used on an aircraft engine in a real world flight.
While speaking on the event, Indonesian Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Arifin Tasrif said,
“We made history today by conducting the first flight of a CN-235 aircraft using Bioavtur … We have been waiting for all this time and we have tried the route between the capital Jakarta and Bandung.”
The flight test, which took place between 10,000 and 16,000 feet in the air, indicated that the biofuel was just as efficient as regular Jet A1 fuel.
Palm oil-based biodiesel blend has been used in land transportation. However, the composition of palm oil remains less 2.4 percent. The government aims to increase the level upto 5 percent by the end of 2025.
