Thousands evacuated as Volcano erupts in Spain
Kathmandu, October 13. La Cumbre Vieja, a volcanic mountain on La Palma Island of Spain, exploded on Saturday. As the lava approached the city, the government urged the residents for emergency evacuation.
Since Monday, the residents of La Palma have been experiencing frequent earth tremors. Tuesday alone, the Spanish National Geological Institute recorded 64 earthquakes of less than 3.5 magnitudes.
According to Satellite footage, a part of the conical volcanic crater collapsed that caused hot lava (1200 degrees celsius) to spread out forming new paths. As the lava approached the city, the residents left their pets and belongings and fled to the neighbouring town of Los Llanos de Aridane. By Sunday evening, more than 800 locals had already reached the neighbouring town.
By Wednesday morning, the lava had spread into an area of 60 hectares, engulfing 1,281 buildings and a cement factory. The mixing of toxic sulphur dioxide gas into the environment forced 3,500 people in nearby areas to stay indoors.
