Kathmandu, October 17. A high-ranking official of the United Nations has announced that the newly formed Taliban government in Afghanistan is preparing to launch “secondary education programs” for girls.
While speaking at a press conference on Friday, the deputy executive director of UNICEF Omar Abdi said, “The de facto minister of education told us that they are working on a framework, which they will announce soon, that will allow all girls to go to secondary school, and we are expecting that to happen very soon.”
The announcement came four weeks after the Taliban began offering secondary education to Afghan schoolboys. The move sparked new hope in Afghan civilians because, during the Taliban’s last reign of terror, from 1996 to 2001, the authority was heavily criticized for robbing people of their freedom and barring women from school and work.
The scenario seems to be improving today. Taliban leaders have also claimed that the new administration will seek to protect the fundamental rights of boys and girls.
