Omicron has many more Delta mutations (already very varied), concentrated in an area that interacts with human cells.

Kathmandu, November 29. The Rome-based Bambino Gesu hospital has published the first-ever three-dimensional “image” of the new “Omicron” variant of COVID-19.

The image produced from the new strain detected in South Africa, reveals the presence of a large number of mutations concentrated in a small area of the viral spike protein that interacts with human cells.

According to the team of researchers, the increased number of mutations “does not automatically mean that these variations are more dangerous.” A separate study is required to measure the severity of this new strain of novel coronavirus.

Claudia Alteri, professor of clinical microbiology at Milan State University, who had primary involvement in the research, said, “It will now be important to define through laboratory experiments whether the combination of these mutations can have an impact on transmission or on the effectiveness of vaccines.”
