Low coverage of testing, vaccination is breeding ground for Omicron, says WHO
Kathmandu, December 2. On Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that low vaccine coverage and low testing rates together serve as a “toxic” platform for mutations and multiplication of novel coronavirus.
The global health body warned that the measures to neutralize the old Delta variant would also check the spread of the newly discovered ‘Omicron’ variant.
“Therefore, we need to use the existing resources to fight against the old ‘Delta’ variant as well as the new ‘Omicron’ variant.” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters.
“But if countries and individuals don’t do what they need to do to stop transmission of Delta, they won’t stop ‘Omicron’ either,” Ghebreyesus noted.
Ghebreyesus has also requested all countries to immediately inoculate their people with adequate doses of available vaccines.
