Half of the fallen peackeepers died due to improvised explosives, says MINUSMA Chief
Kathmandu, December 17. The United Nations has confirmed that 28 of its peacekeepers were killed and 165 were wounded during clashes that occurred in Mali this year.
While addressing a video conference in Mali’s Capital city of Bamako, El-Ghassim Wane, Chief of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali(MINUSMA), stated that improvised explosive devices were responsible for “50% of all events” that resulted in these deaths and injuries.
According to the official declaration, the MINUSMA conducted over 13,000 patrols in the first 11 months of 2021. Likewise, 100 operations were carried out to safeguard people within the same time period.
Nepali Army in MINUSMA
The Nepali Army joined MINUSMA in 2013. At present, 754 of its peacekeeping personnel are safeguarding people in Mali.
15 of them are working as Staff Officers, while 4 are working as Military Experts on Mission.
