Kulman Ghising responds to “frequent power cuts in Kathmandu valley”

Kathmandu, December 31. Nepal Electricity Authority has confirmed that the Kathmandu valley is suffering frequent electricity outages due to technical issues in old transformers.
NEA Executive Director Kulman Ghising told reporters that the increased consumption of power has been causing technical issues in transformers, with some units catching fire. “Due to frequent rainfall, the maintenance work has taken time in many spots, ” Ghising noted.
Addressing the concerns of the consumers, Ghising said that NEA has enough capacity to fulfil high demands, however, since old transformers are giving up, therefore, the authority has also been cutting supply for replacing old transformers with new ones.
He also announced that the NEA is setting up nine new substations to manage the power supply within the valley. “After the completion of the substations, we will be able to supply current of up to 2,000 megawatts,” Ghising said.
At present, Kathmandu valley’s peak demand reaches up to 1,700 megawatts in the evenings.
