Indonesia decides to relocate “capital” from Jakarta to Nusantara

Kathmandu, January 23. On Sunday, the Indonesian parliament announced to shift the nation’s capital to mineral-rich East Kalimantan, an outer island of Borneo. 

President Joko Widodo originally proposed the plan in 2019, when he promised to transfer the capital city of Jakarta owing to its overcrowding of 10 million inhabitants.

The new capital in East Kalimantan, called “Nusantara”, will be built in an area of 256,000 hectares of land. would be constructed on a land area of 256,000 hectares. This city is roughly four times the size of Jakarta.

The massive project will cost around USD 32 billion to the Widodo government.

Media reports claim the new capital would function as the government’s headquarters, while Jakarta will continue to be the country’s economic hub.
