Canadian PM Trudeau declares national emergency
Kathmandu, February 15. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has declared a national emergency in the country following the truckers’ protests against covid measures at the Canadian border.
The announcement is made according to the Emergency Act of 1988, to disperse the crowds of protesting truckers at the border. The act allows the crowdfunding organizations and payment platforms that fund their protest and freeze accounts of individuals and organizations linking to the protest.
Trudeau said, “We cannot and will not allow illegal and dangerous activities to continue”.
After pressure from the United States to act upon the issue, prime minister Trudeau took the step. He said the protests have caused “reputational damage” to Canada. He also tweeted that “scope of these measures will be time-limited, geographically-targeted, and proportionate to the threats they are meant to address. The act will be used to strengthen and support law enforcement agencies, at all levels, wherever needed across the country”.
The emergency powers that came into effect will last for 30 days. It still needs to be ratified by the parliament within a week or it might be subjected to revocation.
