Somalia president cancels oil deal with US hours after being signed

Kathmandu, February 21. Somalia has canceled an oil agreement with US on the same day as it was signed. On Saturday, Abdirashid Mohamed Ahmed, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced that an oil deal was signed with a US based firm.
He revealed that the deal was a “huge moment” and “victory” for the people of Somalia.
In the same day, President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed said through a statement that the deal had been nullified. A tweet from the presidential palace read, “it contravenes Presidential Decree 7/8/2021 which bans the inking of deals during elections so as to protect public resources from exploitation during elections.”
While the president and prime minister of Somalia had different stances on various occasions, they were on the same page in this case. Prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble said that the deal was “illegal” and “unacceptable”. He further tweeted that he will take all measures to protect the country’s natural resources.
