UK opens its first “smart” prison, aims to reduce crime rates
Kathmandu, March 6. Britain has opened its first “smart” prison in an aim to cut down crime rates in the country. The cells, without bars on windows at Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) in Northamptonshire, Central England was opened on Friday.
The prisoners will be known as “residents”, whereas the cells will be known as “rooms”. The prison has a capacity of 1,700 prisoners along with facilities such as gym, snooker table, table tennis table and a computer tablet.
According to the UK’s Department of Justice (DoJ), it is the first jail in the country to have been designed with education, training and jobs for prisoners on release as its main purposes – factors it says are proven to cut crime and reduce reoffending. They further added that bar-less windows will put an end to drones bringing in illegal drugs, phones and weapons into the prison.
It is reported that the government is working to provide on-the-job trainings and workshops for the prisoners.
The prison is the first of six new prisons in UK. This prison started construction in 2019 and has prisoners arriving in since last month.
The Department of Justice hopes to create thousands of jobs for local communities and invest millions in local roads and infrastructure as part of the 4 billion pound investment, while also rehabilitating thousands of offenders and keeping the public safe.
