Mali’s ex-Prime Minister Soumeylou Maiga dies in detention

Kathmandu, March 22. Mali’s ex-Prime Minister Soumeylou Maiga has died in detention on Monday. The news was confirmed by a close relative of his family.

He was an influential figure in Mali in the security sector. Maiga was detained in 2021 after the country was taken over by military junta.

His close relative spoke to the Associated Press in terms of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press. Further, he revealed that Maiga’s health condition had deteriorated since the past few days. Requests for his evacuation from Mali was made, but was denied. He died in a clinic.

Niger’s President Mohamed Bazoum tweeted condolences and said that his death was similar to that of an assassination. He further related Maiga’s death to that of President Modibo Keita, in 1977.

Maiga served as prime minister of Mali from 2017 until 2019. He was 67.
