Kathmandu, April 13. Finland is launching a debate on whether or not to join NATO. Sweden is also debating on the same lines.

Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin held a joint press conference with Swedish counterpart Magdalena Andersson on Wednesday. Marin said, “There are different perspectives to apply (for) NATO membership or not to apply and we have to analyze these very carefully.” She added that a decision could be reached within weeks.

On the other hand, Andersson also said that they were evaluating their position outside NATO.

Additionally, Finland and Sweden are non-aligned militarily, but Russia’s aggressive stance over Ukraine has led to change in public sentiments. Public polls suggest that around 68% people are in favor for Finland joining NATO.

However, Finland and Sweden already have a collective support as a part of European Union(EU). According to an article in the EU treaty, if a member becomes a victim of armed aggression, other members should come for aid.
