Kathmandu, April 14. After two years of leading the Kathmandu-based Indian embassy, the Indian ambassador to Nepal Vinay Mohan Kwatra is returning home. Earlier this week, the embassy organized a farewell gathering on its own premise at Lainchaur.

Nepali Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, and former prime ministers Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, and Madhav Nepal were spotted at the farewell event.

According to our sources, Dahal and Nepal were in Baluwatar a few hours before the farewell event. They had seated a ruling coalition meeting at PM Deuba’s official residence. Minutes after the meeting was closed, the three of them moved to Lainchaur.

After the photos got viral on social media, the public slammed the three prime ministers who lined up to bid farewell to a diplomatic official. The diplomatic community in Nepal has also been taken aback by the action.

As per the diplomatic norms, the departing ambassador arranges a schedule to visit the prime minister’s office to say goodbye. Kwatra, on the other hand, had extended an invitation to the prime minister to visit him at his home. The move obviously demonstrates that Nepal’s current leadership favors the neighboring superpower.

What was the purpose of PM Deuba’s visit to Lainchaur?

During his latest visit to India, PM Deuba met the chief of Indian intelligence agency RAW, Samantha Goyal. Goyal urged Deuba to call off the upcoming local elections when the two were eating lunch at Vanaras.

According to our sources, Goyal does not want Prachanda – Madhav faction to compete in the elections. Therefore, taking the Prachanda – Madhav duo to the embassy would try to convey a meaning that they were not anti-India.

Nevertheless, Deuba’s move has also indicated that the leaders of the ruling coalition are trying to postpone the upcoming May elections.
