Nepal, India agree to “close borders” during May elections

Kathmandu, April 20. Officials of Nepal and India seated a joint meeting on Tuesday to discuss border security during the May elections.
During the meeting held in the Indian state of Bihar, the official from both countries agreed to close down checkpoints along the Nepal-India border during the elections.
“The open border possesses security threats during the elections, considering to which, we have decided to close all checkpoints 72 hours before the elections,” Chief District Officer of Dhanusha Surendra Poudel told reporters.
Poudel further explained, “We also discussed the issues related to land encroachment and smuggling of drugs and alcohol.”
