Kathmandu, May 2. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has confirmed that 3,400 metric tons of food aid were supplied to Ethiopia’s Tigray area in the month of April.

The humanitarian office also said that 142 fully loaded trucks were used to transport the food. . In addition, aid workers were able to transfer 10 tankers of fuel in three convoys over the Semera route.

‘The aid was delivered to several refugee camps in the districts of Mekelle, Abi-Adi, Adwa, Axum, Adigrat, Maichew,’ the office said.

Humanitarian Crisis in Tigray

In September of 2020, a heavy war broke out between the federal government and Tigray Liberation Front. By the end of the year, 2.2 million people were forced to leave their residences and seek refuge in neighboring countries.

Six months later in June, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) released an analysis report that claimed that 3.5 lakh people were starving. The “man-made famine disaster” was created by Ethiopian and Eritrean forces who were obstructing food and relief. 

It was observed that food obstruction and sexual violence were used as primary weapons in the war.

UN released $40 million ’emergency funds’ in November

In November 2021, Martin Griffiths, the UN humanitarian director announced that 40 million dollars had been released to resolve the humanitarian crisis in Northern Ethiopia.

“ the funds allocated through Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) will assist relief agencies in reaching the most vulnerable,” Griffiths said.

Since then, the Ethiopian government and aid organizations have helped 10 million people in Tigray.
