Supreme Court begins hearing of writ against appointment of new IGP

Kathmandu, May 6. The Supreme Court has started hearing the writ petition filed against the government’s decision to appoint Dhiraj Prakash Singh as the new Inspector General of Police(IGP) of Nepal Police.

A single bench of Justice Sushmalata Mathema is hearing the case.

Dhiraj Pratap Singh new IGP of Nepal Police

On Sunday, the cabinet of ministers decided to appoint Dhiraj Pratap Singh as the new inspector general of Nepal Police. Singh will be the 29th IGP. He will be the successor to Shailesh Thapa Kshetri, who retired after serving thirty years at Nepal Police. He took up the post on Monday.

According to the Police Rules, the government can appoint the police chief based on merit and work performance. Further, along with Singh, Bishwaraj Pokhrel, Sahakul Bahadur Thapa and Rabindra Bahadur Dhanuk were also competing for the post.

AIG of Police Bishwo Raj Pokharel filed a writ at Supreme Court

AIG Raj Pokharel filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court on Monday. He filed the petition against the Nepal Government’s decision of appointing Dhiraj Pratap Singh as the new inspector general of Nepal Police.

Further, Pokhrel demanded an interim order saying that Singh was appointed violating the seniority level. Singh was the youngest amongst the competing candidates.
