Sri Lanka in state of emergency for second time

Kathmandu, May 7. Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa declared a state of emergency in Sri Lanka for the second time on Friday.

With the announcement, security personnel are granted powers to stop nationwide protests against Rajapaksa. Further, police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse crowds infront of  the national parliament, earlier on Friday.

A spokesperson revealed that the tough laws were announced to ensure public order. Unions in Sri Lanka blamed the president for the crisis and closed shops on Friday.

Further, the declaration gives powers to security personnel to detain people without judicial supervision, along with deploying troops to maintain order.

Moreover, the latest declaration came after protestors stormed outside Rajapaksa’s office. Many other small groups have been storming homes of other leaders.

The laws came into effect since mid-night Friday and 85,000 police force have been deployed for protection of the leaders.
