Supreme Court orders to halt construction of Nijgadh airport

Kathmandu, May 26. The Supreme Court has barred the government to construct an international airport in Nijgadh. The decision was given on Thursday.

The construction of  an international airport in Nijgadh has been controversial since its initiation. Environmentalists have shown their concern and opposed the plan. Disputes occurred due to excessive deforestation for the construction of the airport.

Additionally, Former secretary Dwarikanath Dhungel and others had filed a writ petition over the issue in 2019.

A full bench of Justices Hari Krishna Karki, Bishwambhar Prasad Shrestha, Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada, Prakashman Singh Raut and Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma made such order in a writ petition filed in relation to the construction of airport in Nijgadh.

Earlier, on December 6, 2019, a single bench of Justice Tanka Bahadur Moktan had ordered to immediately stop the construction of the airport.

The writ petition revealed the petitioners opposing the construction of international airport, damaging trees in the area.
