Torrential rains kill 106 people in Brazil

Kathmandu, June 1. In the northeastern Brazilian state of Pernambuco, more than one hundred people have died as a result of the effects of excessive rain.

Last week, torrential downpours began on Wednesday, causing floods and landslides in 14 municipalities.

The municipal corporations declared a state of emergency and collectively launched evacuation efforts.

More than 6,000 people were evacuated in a week, the rescue teams told reporters. They also confirmed the deaths of at least 106 people, the majority of whom belonged to the state capital Recife.

33 municipalities in the neighboring state of Alagoas have also declared an emergency. 

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro declared that the government will allocate USD 210 million to the reconstruction of the impacted areas.
